About the course: The method in teaching throughout this course is based on the principals of MBSR; mindfulness based stress reduction, which has been proven to have significant results in dealing with stress reduction, pain and illness using mindfulness meditation. Another lineage, MBCT is now also used throughout the UK for dealing with mental health, specifically directed towards relapses in depression. And world wide it is being introduced into health care systems and as a part of treatments. This course is a simple introduction into the above and it does not cover the full extent of the usual MBSR however, as first step it will introduce you into the world of mindfulness in a thorough but gentle way. It is my belief, that to discover mindfulness; and have the opportunity to wake up to the awareness of having the choice of being mindful or not, is a truly great thing.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.
Mindfulness provides a simple but powerful route for getting ourselves unstuck, back into touch with our own wisdom and vitality. It is a way to take charge of the direction and quality of our own lives, including our relationships within the family, our relationship to work and to the larger world and planet, and most fundamentally, our relationship with our self as a person. It is an appreciation of the present moment. It is the direct opposite of taking life for granted. (Jon Kabat-Zinn, wherever you go there you are)
Home Practice: The practices we will do in class, will be a guide for your home practice; homework how wonderful!. I would stress to you that the homework element of this course is really vital and will be a big foundation for you in mindfulness. It is like learning anything, take for example learning how to play a musical instrument the more you practice at home the better you are at playing, right?. Well the same goes for the work we do on this course, remember, we have spent our whole lives training how to be un-mindful and on automatic pilot so the more work we put in, it makes sense then, the more we will get from it for ourselves. I will be giving you CD’s to take home each week to assist your practice. A useful attitude to adopt is – ‘I’ll give it a go, with an open mind. At the end of the course I’ll decide what the learning has been for me and what I can take away with me’.
